The Province of Jabari

With a climate similar to east Slygon, Jabari is the most even of out of the four provinces. Seasons in Jabari are on average very clear-cut. Its summers are pleasant, not very hot and with low humidity. Winters are rainy but not too cold winters, with the rare sighting of snow only reserved for the coldest of days. Spring and Autumn see the most wildlife activity. The former witnesses the cycle of life beginning a new, with animals returning to their summer-time lands from their slumber or migration to mate and perpetuate the species. The later assists to the final preparations for the coming cold temperatures, with the newborns having to learn fast to be able to accompany the herds. The pluvial profile potentiates the growth of many forest and agricultural lands. The conifers up north near Skadi are the most treasured sources of wood for their hardness. Yet, the deciduous woodlands, that paint their retreating leaves in hues of red, gold, and orange, satiate most of the provinces’ needs. Along its stretch, many rivers cross it, the most formidable being the Inori and its two affluents Hada and Zhu. The bearded carp, an indigenous species of the Lake Hiba and Cuki river (Houi canton) swim upriver to lay their eggs on the sacred lake twice a year, during the Spring and Autumn equinoxes.

Jabari is the most open province of Tremanath, having established since early days trade agreements with the eastern cities of Slygon. In fact, after the initial wars with the Jewel in the Middle, Slygon was even allowed to have its own port city, Mareari, in the Zanji canton. Following Slygonian laws and rules, this outpost has facilitated trade interactions so much a similar offer was made to the Domain of Maakaan recently. This led to great scientific developments, with the exchange of ideas resulting in prodigious evolution in ship and sail design, as well as the invention of gunpowder and fireworks. On the flip side, riches and influence breath jealousy on those around it, and Jabari has seen the vilest internal struggles of all regions of Tremanath. The times of the bellicose Jabari republics only saw true end when the Hyuga family of the Hayami canton pushed the Vorfon back far enough. Finding a breather, they then turned their attention to effectively subduing all of Jabari, until “one could drink water out from the air”. Treason dictated the ruin of the Imperial city of Hyuga, with the ensuing power struggle lasting for a short number of years until the new Emperor Sora I of Snake House of Hensai come out as victorious and moved the seat of power to Char Char Saran, right off the Hiba Lake and the Toshiro mountain pass.

Jabari natives are in their vast majority Zeyurai believers, disciples of the principles of life’s duality. Through meditation and self-searching, the Jabari find the way to improve themselves and, through it, the world that surrounds them. It is interesting to see that, while initially forbidden, even slaves were eventually allowed some short minutes to meditate and feed their soul. Nowadays, slavery has been abolished in Tremanath, yet the serfs that support the weight of the empire on their backs. Slaves in everything but name, they are still allowed (and encouraged) to take time to gaze inwards in an attempt to resolve one’s biggest struggle: the Challenge of Facets.

Jabari is constituted by five cantons going north to south:

– Hayami
: the river-lands are well known for their extensive fluvial network. The river Inori, the longest in Tremanath, and fed by its affluent Hada (upstream) and Zhu (downstream), is the beating heart of a canton of fishermen, sweet-water clams oysterers, and seaweed harvesters. The old Imperial city of Hyuga used to stand tall and proud on the south bank of the Inori, before its complete and utter destruction. Two conspiring cousins of the Emperor, with hearts filled with jealousy and treachery, plotted against the monarch. The eldest, from the fortress of Mijon, turned a blind eye to a contingent of Vorfon soldiers; the youngest alerted for an impending attack coming Northwest and opened the city gates to meet the enemy, knowing full well they the enemy came from Northeast. Once the Vorfon troops and city guards were all but done with each other, the returning battalions proceeded to ensure Hyuga would not see another sunrise.

– Mingo:
also called the Basin of Mingo, the canton is a depression between Hayami and Houi, with a valley popular for bamboo plantations. The locals use the tree and all its components in their everyday lives. In traditional Mingotan medicine, the bamboo segments are cut, boiled or heated, and put on the bodies of those who are ill, believing that the suction formed will remove the illness from the bodies. Whatever they don’t use, they trade with the neighboring cantons to built boats and fish traps. It is also well known for its artists, being considered one of the most bucolic and romantic places on Tremanath. Many artists, from musicians, poets, and painters come to Mingo to immerse themselves in the suave sway of the bamboo trees to produce their masterpieces. Many stay and found their schools and circle of disciples and teaching. Those who leave produce their strongest work, as they always long for those peaceful meadows caressed by a languid Summer sun.

– Houi:
the gentle Houi Rise between two rivers leads up to the Kymune mountains. Being very sacred to the Zeyurai followers, the strategic location of the Zeyurai pass allows safe and easy travel to pilgrims wishing to visit one of the many mountain ranges’ temple complexes. The Imperial seat of Char Char Saran is located near the lake Hiba and under the covering shade of the mountains. Legend says that the first Emperor seating in Char Char Saran was a fierce devotee, and chose the place to be close to holy places, feeling they would inspire him to chose best for his subjects. Historians dispute this, offering a counter-explanation that maybe the Emperor decided on the location due to the immense collateral damage a front assault would cause, using his fellow believers as human shields. Despite such debates, the truth is that the weary travelers are now greeted by the blinding sight of the seat of power of the Tremanathi ruler.

Zanji: the dale of two rivers is a small yet very fertile land, with the locals performing a crop rotation system to maximize food without depleting the soils. In spite of the province of Ayani being known for its agrarian tradition, Zanji has been the epicenter of recent innovation in that field. New techniques learned from foreigners and visitors has made a vast improvement to what Zanji can offer and, once the knowledge spread to other cantons, improved the overall quality of life and feed of the populace of the Empire. Soybean plays an integral role in this, and from it, the famous Zanjii spirit zhunstudai is produced. The Slygonian outpost of Mareari sees quite a lot of in and outbound trade between both sovereignties since it was gifted to the Thorian Empire (now managed by a joint team of ambassadors of the League of Cities).

– Masari:
the canton is a synonym for the dense deciduous forest bordering Indyvar. A lot of game during all seasons makes it a very attractive region for hunters. Dear and elk visit it during Spring times for their mating season, while birds tend to migrate and stay in Masari during Winter, especially those with thicker layers of feathers that could not cope with the heat and humidity of Indyvar. Most celebrations, remnants of old, take place during Autumn, when the leaves turn from green to red, orange, and gold, coloring the forest. In spite of the port city of Mareari has diverted some of the attention north to Zanji, Masari still holds a close connection to the eastern cities of Slygon, in past times with the capital of Larazazzi of the Holy Thorian Empire, and now with Tirina.
